What is the Student Appeal?

You may have seen these guys on campus, and you may wonder – who are they, and what exactly do they do? Well, hopefully this guest blog post will help to fill the gaps!

This guest blog was brought to you by Sarah Tan who is currently a second year student doing a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She is the Student Appeal Communications Advisor, and this is her second year on the committee. She comments that, ‘Volunteering with The Student Appeal has been one of the highlights of my university life! You get to meet heaps of new people and it’s for an excellent cause!’

And I take her word on that.

Thank you Sarah for this blog post! If anyone would like to submit a guest blog, please feel free to get in touch with me at dhng[at]student.unimelb.edu.au.

Here is what The Student Appeal is all about.

What is the Student Appeal?

The Student Appeal is a student-led group of volunteers raising funds to support students in financial need and to build awareness of the University’s need for philanthropic support.

We first started in 2006 and since then, have raised more than $90,000 to help students on campus. The success of this program is thanks to the hard work of well over 900 student volunteers!

The donations from our campaign are distributed through the Student Financial Aid Office which assesses the eligibility of students for financial aid and awards grants to those who are in greatest need.

Volunteers are back in 2014 with an exciting summer fundraising initiative getting underway in Semester 1. We launched in O Week and the Student Appeal committee is currently recruiting and training volunteers during Weeks 1 – 4. We will be campaigning on campus during Weeks 4 – 8.

What does a volunteer do?

This year, there are various ways in which volunteers can help out with our campaign:

(1) Making announcements during lectures
(2) Asking for donations around campus
(3) Writing ‘Thank You’ cards to donors at the end of each semester.

How do you sign up to be a volunteer?

IT IS COMPLETELY FREE! Also, once you’ve finished 4 hours of campaigning, you get a Student Appeal t-shirt, a certificate of appreciation and an invite to our ‘Thank You’ event at the end of each semester.
