Week 2 studying abroad: Can I go home now?

My second week studying abroad was…pretty crappy.

It hasn’t been the greatest week and I’ve been feeling pretty homesick. I miss family and friends, I miss Melbourne, and I miss unimelb.

Happenings in Week 2

Week 2 has been full of classes, and tbh – I’m not really enjoying my classes very much. I’ve been dreading going to class everyday.

I’m not a fan that they’ve condensed what normally is a 4 month course, into 1 month. The speed we’re going through content is absolutely insane. The content is also not what I’ve been expecting.

The lecture slides haven’t been updated since the last cohort because it’s got completely incorrect dates on them and it’s got USA written all over the slides instead of Australia.

I’ve also had trouble studying because of the noise in our hotel, and because of the bad wifi.

All our resources are online…but we can’t access the material because there’s barely any internet coverage here. Plus, we don’t have access to a library.

It’s just been a very frustrating week.

“Can I take your picture?”

I think the most annoying thing for me this week was having a cameraman following us everywhere we go.

I mean, sure take a couple of photos here and there for your promotional needs. But having a camera right in your face during your classes, them filming everything you do…it’s invasive and uncomfortable.

The cameraman even followed a group of students to a club the other night. That is just…weird.

Keeping up with uni shenanigans

I’ve also been trying to keep up with uni news and such, and it seems like a lot is changing on campus! Have you guys seen this website with the upcoming changes?

First of all, it’s so ironic that there’s only one student in the banner for a website supposedly called ‘students‘.

Secondly, whoa – I don’t remember the existence of this website!

And thirdly – I really wished they’d tell us more about these changes.

The people need more details!

I’ve also been trying to organise my subjects for next semester and it’s proving to be somewhat of a nightmare.

I need to do three level 3 subjects, and I haven’t been able to find 3 subjects that I like and that won’t give me a horrible timetable with many clashes.

Previously I was set on doing:

  • Biogeography and Ecology of Fire
  • Marine Ecosystems: Ecology and Management, and
  • Imaging the Environment

But I got an email about the biogeography subject, and they’ve changed the compulsory 1 week field trip from the mid sem break to Week 3…even though it clearly says on the handbook the field trip is in the break.

There’s no way I can take the whole week 3 off. I’ve got other compulsory classes to go to too.

So I’ve dropped that subject now, which is sad because I was really looking forward to it.

Now to find another subject.

Back to the handbook.

In other news…

My beloved cat Rosie has gone missing and it’s been pretty upsetting for me. You may know her from this blog post.

Trying to do a class presentation while choked up in tears was not fun :(

I know Rosie’s just a cat, but you know, she’s not just a cat to me! It’s hard being on the other side of the world when things like this happen.

While Week 2 hasn’t been the greatest, this coming week should be a ripper! We’re heading to the Amazon forest for 4 days and I can’t wait for it.
