Have you already paid your Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), but aren’t entirely sure why? Do you feel like your $$$’s have done a runner and you’ve been left broke and alone?
If you’ve answered yes, then please read on for a list of how to make the most of those dollars that flew out of your account (or onto your HECs) on March 31. Play your cards right and you can get your money back twice over. Interested? Vamos!
Fancy getting to uni between 8:30am and 10:30am Monday to Friday? You’re right, me neither. But if you are nuts, head to the Ida Bar on Level 1 of Union House for some free breakfast consisting of toast, cereal, tea and coffee. KEY POINT – there are also pancakes, eggs and bacon available on Thursdays in North Court (estimated waiting time of 25 min between 9am and 10am).
Free BBQ lunch (vegan options available) with live bands on Tuesdays 1pm-2pm in North Court! Get around it and into the line as soon as possible (estimated waiting time is 30 minutes).
Need to break a lease on a rental property because you can’t handle your housemate’s passive aggressive messaging? Experienced sexual harassment or any uncomfortable issues at work? Head to the UMSU Legal Department for some free advice for all enrolled students at Unimelb. These guys are pros, so bring some information (write that evidence down!) about your issue before you turn up. They also give good advice about Myki fines :)
Rowden White Library
If you are looking for the comfiest of chairs and chillest of vibes, look no further! This space is on Level 2 of Union House and has books, DVDs, computers, VR headsets, printers, magazines, music, a room full of bean bags to sleep in and Foxtel screening all day! Oh my god, I can’t breathe. This is a designated NON-STUDY ZONE, though I do push through my Arts readings in the corner. If you want to borrow anything, just flash that golden student card, IT’S FREE!
Take Care of your Mental Health
Midweek mindfulness session? Yes please.
Follow me to the Leigh Scott Room in the Baillieu Library from 1:15pm-2pm on Wednesdays. Going through a rough patch and wouldn’t mind talking to someone or having someone listen to you? The great folks over at the Counselling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offer currently enrolled students free short-term counselling services with professionals. This would cost a mint in the real world, so make the most of it!
So, you have a stack of free events, activities, workshops and services at Unimelb, which makes it such a great place to be. Perhaps paying the SSAF isn’t actually a bad idea. Well, I’ll let you decide on that. Now go forth and enjoy the freebies that you’ve already paid for in your SSAF!
